Six Years of Promova: From Vocabulary Lists to a Language Learning Platform

Promova Birthday

Back in 2019, we started with a simple idea: an app called Ten Words to help people grow their vocabulary, one small step at a time. Just a few words a day—but it was enough to spark something bigger. Six years later, that small beginning has grown into the Promova language learning platform. We combine expert guidance with technology to help people feel more at home in a new language—no matter where they start.

How It Started

Promova was founded by Andrew Skrypnyk—an engineer by training, with a background in tech leadership and a tendency to turn late-night ideas into full-blown ventures. Before Promova, Andrew had already built several products and led teams as a CTO. He’s also been named one of Forbes' 30 Under 30—not that he brings it up much (we do it for him).
The idea for Promova came in a very crowded space. Language learning was already a saturated market, full of polished apps and big budgets. On paper, starting a new one didn’t seem like the best bet. But sometimes, having too much common sense can get in the way of building something new.

Fittingly, we launched on April 1. The timing felt poetic. Chasing a big idea always involves a bit of foolishness, but that’s often where the fun begins.

What We Have Now

Language Learning for Today’s Minds

In 2022, Promova went through a complete transformation. We started by asking: what would make language learning more convenient? We saw how hard it was to find a platform that combined self-paced lessons with tutor-led sessions for tackling tricky topics or preparing for presentations. So we built exactly that. Here’s what it became.

Now, Promova caters to both individuals and businesses, supporting beginners taking their first steps and advanced learners seeking new challenges.

Language Courses for Self-Learning

Promova offers courses in 12 languages:

Our course library covers a range of topics, from English with TV Series to Business English and American Accent, with plenty more to explore. Available on iOS, Android, and web, Promova ensures seamless access across devices. Every course is designed by expert linguists, rigorously reviewed, and shaped by user feedback to ensure an effective and enjoyable learning experience.

Lessons with Tutors

If self-paced learning isn’t your thing, or if you just like having someone guide you through the process, we offer two options: one-on-one and group lessons.

One-on-One Tutoring

Our one-on-one tutoring focuses on helping you achieve your specific goals. Whether you need to master tenses, prepare for a presentation, or create a study plan to level up your skills, we’ve got you covered.

What sets our tutoring apart is our handpicked, certified teachers who work closely with you to address your individual needs. They are carefully selected for their qualifications and experience, and we ensure their teaching methods align with your goals.

Group Tutoring Lessons

Our group classes cater to different language levels, focusing on grammar, vocabulary, and speaking. They provide opportunities to engage with topics like leadership, teamwork, climate change, or the role of sports in society.

With a flexible schedule, learners can join classes that match their interests and goals, ensuring each session is relevant and engaging. Plus, with a small group size, you’ll get personalized attention while practicing with peers.

Inclusivity at the Core

At Promova, we want language learning to be easier for everyone. In October 2023, we launched Dyslexia Mode—the first of its kind on a language learning platform. It uses Dysfont, a special typeface designed by a dyslexic designer, to make reading easier for people with dyslexia. In 2024, we made it even better with more font options and an optional white noise feature to help with focus.

That same year, we also launched a free American Sign Language (ASL) course. It’s made for hearing people who want to learn the basics of ASL—especially for moments when clear communication really matters, like in emergencies or public spaces.

New Features

We don’t add features just for the sake of it–but when something truly supports the learning process, we’re eager to bring it on board. Here are a few recent additions we’re especially proud of:

AI Role-Play

Learners can engage in realistic conversations with AI on everyday topics—whether it’s a job interview, a trip to the doctor, or ordering at a restaurant. This interactive tool simulates real-life situations, offering learners the chance to practice speaking without any pressure. The AI provides instant, personalized feedback on pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary usage, making it a great way to build confidence in practical conversations. It’s a safe space for learners to try out new phrases, refine their language skills, and get comfortable with communication before stepping into the real world.

Grammar with Louise

Grammar isn’t everyone’s favourite, so we’ve made it more approachable. In short, focused episodes, Louise explains complex English topics in a way that’s clear, relatable, and easy to revisit.

Short Video Lessons

What began with Giovana Gogola’s popular language tips has become a series featuring different teachers and creators. These bite-sized videos are practical, visual, and great for only a few minutes to learn something new.

Beyond these, we’ve made dozens of improvements—from personalized AI-powered learning plans to contextual vocabulary practice—all designed to support meaningful, lasting progress.

Standing with Ukraine

Promova is proud to support our home country, Ukraine. Since November 2023, we have participated in the Ukrainian "Future Perfect" national program, offering three years of free access to English courses for Ukrainians. This initiative aligns with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s efforts to establish English as an official language of international communication. To date, over 100,000 Ukrainians have benefited from this program.

We are also recognized as an official resource for foreigners learning Ukrainian, and we are endorsed by the State Language Protection Commissioner of Ukraine.

Okay Fine, Let’s Talk About the Awards

If we’re not allowed to brag just a little in a birthday post, when are we? So yes—Promova’s been lucky to pick up a few shiny recognitions recently (and no, this isn’t even the full list). In 2025, we were named #4 in Education on Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies list. We also picked up:

  • EdTechX Award (Language Learning category)
  • Adaptive Platform of the Year – EdTech Breakthrough Awards
  • Silver & People’s Choice Lovie Awards for Best Visual Design
  • Shortlisted for Best Entrepreneur of the Year & Tech for GOOD – AllStars Awards
  • Featured in The EUROPAS 100 Hottest Startups
  • Shortlisted for the QS Reimagine Education Awards (E-Learning category)

It’s all incredibly flattering—but if we’re honest, the thing that means the most isn’t a trophy. It’s the messages we get from learners telling us how they finally understood a grammar rule, passed a job interview, or just felt a little more at home in a new language. That’s the good stuff. That’s what keeps us going.

Some Numbers We’re Grateful For

Over 20 million downloads still seem a bit hard to believe. Our Instagram community has grown to 4 million, and learners have given us an average rating of 4.6 across app stores. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts!

More meaningfully:

  • 93% of our users say Promova helped them reach their language learning goals
  • 87% would recommend us to a friend or family member

We don’t take that lightly and try to earn that trust daily.

Thank You for Being Part of This

If you’re reading this, thank you. Whether you’ve been with us since Ten Words or just found us yesterday, we’re so grateful. You’ve helped us build something real—a community where people from all over the world support each other in learning, growing, and messing up verbs without judgment.

To say thanks, we’ve prepared a little birthday surprise for you! [Click here] to unlock your gift and keep learning.

As for the future? We’re sticking with what matters: creating a learning experience that’s effective, supportive, and actually enjoyable. Here’s to many more years of figuring it out together.
